"Updates on Shave Shack and Lucky's in Lee County"
https://www.news-press.com/story/news/local/2019/09/06/luckys-market-lee-and-collier-works-shaved-ice-coming-celebration-park/2230265001/

Lucky's Market is a grocery store where you can drink beer and wine while you're shopping. The food is for healthy eating and has great prices. Despite the building being ready to open and looking new as ever, the owner has pushed back the opening to 2020. They want to get their distributor open in Orlando to make it easier to get product for the Florida locations.

The issue for this certain article is that they are pushing back the opening date and it's causing customers to become impatient. They recently had two locations around the nation shut down and they are worried this is going to effect them.

This effects the owner of the company and the people waiting for the store to open.

"Locals search for stability at Southwest Florida Mega Job Fair"
https://www.news-press.com/story/news/local/2019/09/10/swfl-mega-job-fair-helps-locals-searching-stability/2245217001/

Jobnewsusa.com put together a mega job fair for the citizens of southwest Florida. Over 600 people who are looking for a job attended this event with on-spot-interviews. The key to this event is to limit the unemployment rate. Even though the unemployment rate is at an all-time low for Lee and Collier County, they want to keep it even lower and hopefully allow the people to get a job that they are qualified for.

The issue with this is that there are people within the counties that are not offering people full time even though they are working 40 hours a week. Many people within the area are coming from single-parent homes and need to work full time in order to keep food on the plate for their family. There also is a shortage on housing within the area causing people to get jobs over an hour away even if it is within the same county. This area is mainly for people who are retired with money and can afford living. But in the same time, there are people who are raising their family here and need to work full time just to keep their family happy.

This effects people with no careers or minimum paying jobs, single-parent families, and the unemployed.

"Restaurant Inspections: Lehigh Acres restaurant accrues 33 violations"
https://www.news-press.com/story/life/food/2019/09/02/restaurant-inspections-lehigh-acres-china-star-accrues-33-violations/2147927001/

Within the world, everyday businesses are inspected by the health inspector. They post the results online so that everyone within the area is aware of this happening and can decide if they want to go. A Lehigh Acres restaurant, China Star, recently was cited with 33 violations.

The issue with is situation is that the workers are feeding people this food knowing that they are violating the health code. They have found live roaches in the fryers, food (chicken, shrimp, pork) have been left out at improper temperatures, and the employees are not using gloves when they are preparing the food.

This effects the employees and owners because they could be out of a job. This also effects the customers who are ordering from here and eating the food because they could get sick from eating foods are improper temperatures.

"Lee football officials, schools still working on a deal to officiate games this season"
https://www.news-press.com/story/sports/high-school/football/2019/08/13/lee-county-football-officials-strike-deal-schools-return-work/2000799001/

Referees for the South Gulf Florida Football Officials Associations have taken a strike against the Lee County School board just weeks after signing their contract for the upcoming school year. Just days away from the fall season starting, the referees hung up their whistles and said they aren't going to officiate unless they got more money.

The problem with this is that the referees think they deserve to be paid more. The Lee County School Board didn't say no to this situation. They just couldn't pay them anymore at the time due to the budgets already being made.

This effects the SGFOA, the Lee County School Board, and most importantly the athletes. Thee SGFOA have the problem but they are making it a bigger issue to the school board.

"13 Orlando restaurants shut down for roaches, rodents, and sewage backups"
https://www.orlandosentinel.com/business/os-bz-restaurant-inspections-august-20190911-mczyqabhszbzff4nqs5a6bjxau-story.html

The problem with this is within the story itself. Restaurants through Orange, Osceloa, Lake, and Seminole Counties have been shut down due to improper health violations. Employees have been saying that rodent droppings are just rice that's all over the ground. Most of the places fixed the problems that they had but others will take a while.

The people that this effects are the employees and the owners of the business.

  1. Hi Nicole!
Reading about all your local stories were very interesting. Thank you for showing me what else is going on locally because there is only so much you can find on your own. The one that caught my eye the most was the restaurant that had 33 violations. It is absolutely disgusting how some of these restaurants get away with their disgusting ways and people do not find out until these articles come out. It is so unhealthy how some restaurants clean this way.

  2. The story about your local Chinese place reminds me of the one in my small town. Mine got shut down for I think 20 different violations including a really bad roach problem. One of my friends used to work there under the table and she said that they stored meat in 5 gallon buckets on the floor and let the meat get really warm. The Japanese steakhouse in my town got shut down for absolutely ridiculous violations as well. My aunt and uncle run a food truck at Devil's Den in Williston and she said that she had to take a proctored test to get her restaurant license. The fact that you have to take a test to make sure that you know how to do everything safely, then will grossly violate a lot of safety codes is beyond me.

  3. The two stories about the restaurants violating health codes are disgusting. I don't understand how people can knowingly work in those environments but also serve people food made in those places as well. Also the story about the refs in Lee county really sucks. I feel bad for the athletes who are just trying to play a game they love but it's not possible because of a money argument.

  4. Hi Nicole,
I found your articles very interesting and eye-opening, especially the one about all the restaurants closing down for health issues. It is always so baffling to me that a lot of restaurants are currently open that do not follow health standards, and simply just never get caught for it. For the one restaurant that had 33 violations, it is sad that they are even still open when they clearly do not know how to safely run a restaurant.
