My Entrepreneurship Story

My first semester of college was a breeze but was also difficult as well. I was a sport management major (like I am now) and I was still getting to know everyone in my class of 75 sport management majors. Everyone in my class had a different background when it came to sports. Some played collegiate sports (as did I), some only played peewee football, others played sports throughout their high school career, and others just really enjoyed sports and wanted to work in the business side of it.

Throughout the semester, we were split up into groups that would work together on every assignment and project. But for our final project, we worked together as a class. Our final project was to come up with an event that could be held at one of the basketball games during finals week. For this project, we had to pick a leader, their assistants, marketing directors, assistants to the marketing directors, and so on. We had two days to submit who we thought would be good enough to run the entire project and help lead everyone to an A+. Never in my 18 years of living (at the time) did I think my class would pick me. My professor said everyone in the class chose me besides myself.

A little background on why I was chosen. I first went to college in my hometown where my brother was the football start for five years at the university, my grandmother was the mayor, my other brother was a football coach at the high school, my best friend's dad was the Athletic Director at the university, and my aunt had the most successful business in town.

We all had to come up with an idea on what we would be doing for this event. After a week, we decided that we, as a class, were going to raise money for Alzheimer's Awareness. We chose a foundation that we would donate all the money to and invited several people in the foundation to come and enjoy the event with us. Throughout the weeks that we had for this project, I was helping people do stuff within the sports business side that they enjoyed doing. I felt as if I was a little bossy because I wanted it done a certain way so that the AD wouldn't have been mad. It was a successful event and my professor gave us all an A+ for the assignment. We had a great time and we raised a total of $3,000 for the foundation!!

Above is a picture of the court where we held the event. We held it on December 3rd, 2014!

I enrolled in ENT 3003 in hopes to learn more about what it means to be an Entrepreneur and how I can use that in sports. Playing sports is one thing, but being on the business side of sports is where you get all the action on how these players become so successful.

  1. Its great that you were able to raise $3000 for Alzheimer research and prevention. In my current position at work, I am part of a team that does all the planning for several company conferences of 100+ people. At first you scrutinize every decision but after the event, the attendees will come up and say what a great time they had.

  2. Hey Nicole!
I think it is very impressive that everyone in the class picked you. That really shows the type of person you are. Just because you have all of these connections does not necessarily mean why you were chosen. It is very impressive that you were able to raise that much money. This class will definitely help you succeed on the business side of sports.
